Taking Turns: Restoring Right Relations™ is a game that provides opportunities for us to imagine ways of addressing individual and community-based needs that are restorative and holistic, moving away from systems of oppression that result in more violence and harm.

In Taking Turns, we are seeking to create a society that addresses conflict and harm through mutual care, prioritization of relationships, and honoring of humanity, rather than through punishment, expulsion, and criminalization.

This game is a tool to explore restorative and transformative practices within the context of a fictional reality similar to our own. The goal is to work together as a team and to support one another with skills and resources in order to create a sustainable and supportive community. Taking Turns™ can be played with students, families, communities, service providers, and movement workers.

The suggested audience age range is 14 years and up; however the cards and scenarios can be adapted to have age-appropriate discussions with those younger than 14 years old.

About Girls for Gender Equity

Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) works intergenerationally, through a Black feminist lens, to center the leadership of Black girls and gender-expansive young people of color in reshaping culture and policy through advocacy, youth-centered programming, and narrative shift to achieve gender and racial justice.

Taking Turns™ reflects a collective process grounded in collaboration, care, and shared vision. From 2023 to the present, GGE youth participants and staff have contributed to the creation and evolution of the game by exploring what safety and community care can and should look like while encompassing the concepts of restorative justice (how we interact), transformative justice (the world we want for our future), connection to community, and honoring our humanity.
